Former President John Mahama has said that no one has describe his ethnic group or any other ethnic group in the manner in which the President Akufo Addo mounts this complains on the “Akyem Sakawa’ issue.
Speaking in an interview during his tour in the Upper West Region, he said, Isaac Adongo, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central described those behind the Agyapa Royalties Deal as “Akyem Sakawa’ people not people in Akyem as “sakawa”.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo condemned a reference to himself and his home townsfolk as ‘Akyem Mafia’ and ‘Sakawa’ people by opposition MP Isaac Adongo, which was amplified by former President John Dramani Mahama, who shared it on his Facebook timeline a few days ago. At a meeting with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference at the Jubilee House on Friday, 4 August 2020, President Akufo-Addo not only said he was “very disturbed” by the ethnocentric tagging his ethnic group, but also said “that is the kind of language we don’t want in our politics.”
But Mahama in a response said, “I will be the last person disparage any tribe ethnic group. The national chairman SamuelOfosu-Ampofo, many of my former appointees are native are Akyems and I will be last person to express ethnic sentiments”.
