Extend Water, Electricity to Mirigu - Traditional Council appeal to President Akufo-Addo

Updated: Sep 8, 2020

The President of the Mirigu Traditional Council, in the Kassena Nankana District in the Upper East Region, Naba Anthony Anonsona Abisa Atasige III, has made a passionate appeal to President Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency, see to the extension of water and electricity supply to the inhabitants of his traditional area.

The traditional leader made the request when he addressed the President of the Republic at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call on him today, the 3rd of September 2020.

"Your Excellency, the free electricity and water directive by your good self to Ghanaians is also highly commendable, but the people in my traditional area: Mirigu, Nabango and Kandiga, do not have water and more than 80% of the people under my jurisdiction lack electricity. We have therefore not been able to enjoy the offer from your Excellency as a relief incentive following the outbreak of the coronavirus, although our fellow Ghanaians are enjoying elsewhere. There could therefore not be a better time to ask for the extension of electricity supply to the entire area and the provision of water for our people" Naba Anthony Anonsona Abisa Atasige III said.

*New Kassena-Nankana East District*

In his address, the leader of the delegation noted that the eastern part of the erstwhile Kassena - Nankana District (Now the Kassena-Nankana West and Municipal districts) have agitated for a separate district since 1984, and this has been on the radar of successive governments since 1988. He entreated the President to immediately give consideration to their request to create the Kassena - Nankana East Constituency and District.

"The eastern zone comprises seven townships namely: Kandiga, Manyoro, Mirigu, Nabango, Natugnia, Sirigu and Yua. The eastern zone is fairly homogenous in culture, language and ethnicity. Much as Kassem is understood and spoken in the eastern zone, it is mainly a Nankani speaking zone. Mr President, various stakeholders including the chiefs and people have written several petitions to the government appealing for a separate district for the eastern zone. On behalf of the stakeholders and chiefs and people of the eastern part of the Kassena-Nankana West district, we think that the most appropriate time for the demarcation of the constituency and

the creation of a separate district for us, is now, and therefore, passionately appeal to you and the

Electoral Commission to, as a matter of fairness, consider the creation of a constituency for us now" The traditional leader said.

*President Akufo-Addo*

President Akufo-Addo in his response to the request of the traditional leader and his delegation said the Kassena-Nankana West District, is part of Government's ongoing electricity extension project and he will take a personal interest in seeing to the completion of the process of extending electricity and water supply to the area.

"I am going to take a personal interest in making sure that both of these matters, the extension of electricity and water as well, is done as quickly as possible" President Akufo-Addo said.

*President on Request for Creation of District*

On the request for the creation of the new District and Constituency, President Akufo-Addo said it is obviously not possible since the country is just three months into an election. . He called on the delegation to allow the upcoming Parliamentary and Presidential elections to pass so that their demand can be addressed by the next government that will take office on the 7th of January 2021.

"The timing may be awkward for us. Where we are now in August, three months to the election, it will not be possible ro create a constituency which will be oart and parcel of the present arrangement for the December elections". "What i will plead with you is that let us deal with this matter, God willing, the next term and see what can be done" President Akufo-Addo said.
