Assin North MP votes to choose Speaker despite court injunction

The embattled Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson has taken part in the voting process for the selection of a Speaker for the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

This happened Thursday dawn (7 December 2021) despite the fact that a high court has barred him from holding himself as MP-elect and not to partake in today’s swearing-in ceremony because he held dual citizenship (Ghana and Canada) as at the time he filed to contest as MP.

The MP-elect defied the court order and appeared in Parliament.

The clerk of Parliament Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah who had received the court order prevented the embattled MP from participating in the voting process to elect a new Speaker but he was challenged and accused by the NDC MPs of being biased in a heated debate that lasted hours.

The Clerk, however, warned that Parliament cannot be held responsible for the consequences that may arise from Mr Quayson’s decision to vote.

The Speakership race is between Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye and Alban Bagbin.
